How much can I borrow on a mortgage?
The amount you can borrow on a mortgage is calculated slightly differently by each lender. Generally, the mortgage provider will look at your income and expenditure in order to come up with a maximum amount they are willing to offer you.
They look at things like credit card payments, personal loan payments or car finance and will factor those costs in when assessing your affordability, usually, lenders will offer between 4 and 5 times the combined amount of all applicants gross annual income. So if you earn £20,000 per year gross, and your partner earns the same, you could borrow 4-5 x £40,000, which would be between £160,000-£200,000.
